“NJ removes kids with Nazi names from homes”,0,526158.story

I would like to learn more about this story.  In my classes, we have been learning a lot about when/if to report parents to DCFS.  As teachers, it is our responsibility to report any suspicion of abuse or neglect.  After we report it, it is up to the state to do an investigation and determine what/if anything will happen to the family.

In this particular case, I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to remove children from their home simply based on the names their parents gave them.  Obviously, it’s weird and effed up that the parents named their kids after famous white supremacists.  But, in all fairness, it’s a free country and they have first amendment rights, which I learned a lot about recently after my trip to the Freedom Museum in Chicago (it’s free and pretty interesting if you’re interested).  As weird as it is to name your kid Hitler, it is a parents right.  It is also in a parent’s right to teach their kid that whites are better than every other race.  I’m not defending it, but it’s not illegal.  They aren’t releasing any more details on this story right now which means either a) they don’t have any or b) there aren’t any, in which case the parents should get their kids back.
